Former Michigan State OT Spencer Brown commits to Oklahoma; LS Hank Pepper to USC
East Lansing, Mich. – Former Michigan State tackle Spencer Brown will play his final season of college football at Oklahoma, he announced via social media on Wednesday. He committed to the Sooners over offers from USC and Ole Miss, among other programs.
Brown entered the transfer portal as a graduate student on Nov. 27. He spent five seasons at Michigan State and started the past two at right tackle. Brown missed one game this season due to injury but played 519 total snaps. He started 25 games during his time in East Lansing.
Brown’s role at Michigan State expanded each season. His breakout moment came in the 2021 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, when he earned his first career start at right tackle.
The Canton, Mich., native committed to Mark Dantonio and Michigan State ahead of the 2019 season, which he redshirted. A former three-star prospect from Walled Lake (Mich.) Western High School, Brown was the No. 13 player from Michigan and No. 42 offensive tackle in the 2019 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings.
Brown was one of five Michigan State offensive linemen to enter the portal following the 2023 season. He joined tackles Brandon Baldwin and Ethan Boyd, as well as guards Geno VanDeMark and Kevin Wigenton in the portal. The other four have yet to commit.
In total, 15 Michigan State players entered the transfer portal following the Spartans’ 4-8 2023 campaign. Linebacker Darius Snow on Wednesday became the first of that group to withdraw his name from the portal and return to East Lansing.

Spartan interim head coach Harlon Barnett announced on Sept. 30 that Pepper had stepped away from the team. He officially entered the portal on Oct. 18 and did not play the remainder of the season. First-year JUCO transfer Drew Wilson took over as the Spartans’ starting long snapper following Pepper’s departure.
Pepper started the past three seasons at long snapper for Michigan State. He played in just four games this fall to preserve his redshirt. Pepper played the first five games of the 2022 season before missing the final seven with an ailment.
Pepper started all 13 games as a true freshman in 2021.
The Chandler, Ariz., native committed to Michigan State as part of its 2021 class. A former three-star prospect, Pepper was the No. 2 long snapper in his class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. Kohl’s Kicking rated Pepper as a five-star long snapper out of high school.
Michigan State will see a lot of Pepper over the coming years, with USC set to join the Big Ten next season. Pepper has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
