REPORT: Michigan State to play Duke at Breslin Center this December

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State and Duke will meet at the Breslin Center this December, completing a home-and-home series that began with a 2020 Champions Classic game at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

An official date has yet to be determined.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Champions Classic was played in two different arenas for the first time in the event’s history. Michigan State and Duke played at Cameron Indoor, while Kansas and Kentucky played at then-Bankers Life Fieldhouse, home of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

Michigan State won that game in Durham, 75-69, on Dec. 1, 2020. The last time the Spartans and Blue Devils met at the Breslin Center, Duke won, 87-75, on Dec. 3, 2019. The teams also played at the Breslin Center on Dec. 3, 2003. Duke won that game, 72-50.

Michigan State and Duke have met 19 times, with the Blue Devils owning a 15-4 record in those games. The Spartans and Blue Devils last met in a Champions Classic game on Nov. 14, 2023. Duke won, 74-65. The Blue Devils hold a 3-2 edge in the teams’ last five match-ups.

Duke finished the 2024-25 season with a 35-4 (19-1) record. The Blue Devils won the ACC regular season and tournament championships and fell to Houston in the Final Four. Michigan State finished the year with a 30-7 (17-3) record. The Spartans won the Big Ten regular season championship and fell to Auburn in the Elite Eight.

Michigan State finished the season ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll, while Duke finished the season ranked No. 3.

What else do we know about Michigan State’s 2025-26 schedule?

Michigan State is also set to play North Carolina in the 2025 Fort Myers Tip-Off, a two-day invitational that takes place during Thanksgiving week. The Spartans and Tar Heels will meet on Thanksgiving day. St. Bonaventure is also set to participate in the event.

Michigan State will meet Kentucky in the 2025 Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Spartans and Wildcats will play on Nov. 18.

Michigan State will play Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Northwestern, Ohio State, UCLA and USC at the Breslin Center during the 2025-26 Big Ten season. The Spartans will travel to play Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, Washington and Wisconsin. Tom Izzo’s team will play Indiana, Michigan and Rutgers once at home and once on the road.
