Spartan Stadium is getting a facelift, as the Michigan State Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Friday to approve a resolution that would earmark 28 million dollars for upgrades to Spartan Stadium ahead of the 2025 season.

Of that amount, 10 million will be used to replace the three video boards in Spartan Stadium. The remaining funds will be used to renovate club and suite areas in the West Tower of Spartan Stadium.

The Michigan State Board of Trustees also authorized planning for future modernization of Spartan Stadium at Friday’s meeting.

“For more than 100 years, Spartan Stadium has been a gathering place for the Michigan State community,” said Michigan State vice president and athletic director Alan Haller said in a statement released on Friday. “Today’s action by the board is a step towards ensuring that remains a constant for the next 100 years.”

Upgrades to the West Tower and the video boards in Spartan Stadium will begin next month and are expected to be completed before the 2025 season opener against Western Michigan University in late August.

Michigan State’s long-term modernization plans for Spartan Stadium will likely include a new East Tower, as well as structural repairs and seating improvements in the lower bowl area as well as improvement to concourse, concessions, and restroom areas.

“The approval to plan for Spartan Stadium modernization demonstrates the Board’s and administration’s commitment to supporting the football program,” Haller said. “This is an exciting period of reimagining what is possible for the future. Not only will a new East Tower dramatically change the look and feel of the stadium, providing new seating options and an improved experience for fans, it’s an opportunity to develop a space in the heart of campus which could advance the University’s academic, research, and outreach missions.”

The current video boards in Spartan Stadium are outdated and at risk of malfunctioning if not replaced according to the Michigan State Board of Trustees Executive Action Summary. Current video boards were installed in 2011. Video boards are typically replaced once every 10 years.

West Tower renovations include significant improvements to suite and club spaces on the fourth, seventh, and eighth floors. Those spaces have not been renovated since the West Tower opened in 2004, years before Mark Dantonio took over the program. Stadium suite renovation in the West Tower will begin in January and be completed before the last week of August ahead of the season opener against Western Michigan.

Initially funded by internal loans, upgrades to Spartan Stadium that will be completed prior to the 2025 season opener are expected to paid for by corporate donors through naming rights as well other fundraising efforts. The naming rights for video boards is one of the biggest sources of revenue for Michigan State in Spartan Stadium.

Michigan State played its first game in Spartan Stadium in 1923. According to the BOT Executive Action Summary, Spartan Stadium facilities are deficient in comparison to venues used by other Power Four schools in the same peer group as Michigan State. The intent of both short and long-term facility upgrades is to enhance the game day experience at Spartan Stadium for the Michigan State community.
