EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State redshirt freshmen wide receivers Austin Clay and Jaylan Brown intend to enter the transfer portal, SpartanMag learned on Tuesday. Both have four years of eligibility remaining.

Clay (6-0, 171) and Brown (6-1, 192) both redshirted last season, their first in East Lansing, and did not see game action. Two of the younger wide receivers on the roster, Clay and Brown were both projected as deep reserves this fall. SpartanMag unofficially projected Clay as a fourth-string Z (flanker), behind Middle Tennessee State transfer Omari Kelly, Valdosta State transfer Rodney Bullard and true freshman Charles Taplin.

A former three-star recruit from Berea (Ohio) Midpark High School, Clay was the No. 1228 player in the 2024 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. The Cleveland native was also the No. 168 wide receiver and No. 51 player from Ohio in his class.

Brown, also a former three-star recruit, was the No. 815 player, No. 125 wide receiver and No. 125 player from Texas in the 2024 class. He attended Nacogdoches (Texas) High School.

Clay and Brown used strong senior seasons to help gain traction with Michigan State late in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Clay de-committed from Bowling Green and committed to the Spartan program just two days before Early Signing Day in December 2023. He chose Michigan State over additional offers from Akron, Massachusetts, Akron, Navy and Ball State.

Brown, a Nacogdoches, Texas, native, committed to Michigan State just 10 days before National Signing Day in February 2024. He chose the Spartans over offers from Washington State, North Texas and Southern University.

Michigan State returns star sophomore Nick Marsh and sixth-year senior Alante Brown at the wide receiver position. The Spartans also brought in senior Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee State), redshirt junior Chrishon McCray (Kent State), redshirt senior Rodney Bullard (Valdosta State) and Evan Boyd (Central Michigan) via the transfer portal.

Three-star high school recruits Braylon Collier and Charles Taplin joined Michigan State’s wide receiver room in January. Fellow three-star prospect Bryson Williams will enroll this summer.

Clay and Brown become the eighth and ninth players from Michigan State to enter the transfer portal during the spring window. They join redshirt junior defensive back Dillon Tatum, redshirt junior edge Anthony Jones, redshirt sophomore cornerback Caleb Coley, redshirt freshman linebacker Carter Enyard (preferred walk-on), redshirt freshman defensive back DJ Kennard (preferred walk-on), redshirt freshman offensive lineman Kyler Brunan (preferred walk-on) and redshirt junior long snapper Jack Carson Wentz (preferred walk-on).
