Michigan State's Lorenzo White, Ryan Miller, Rick Comley elected to Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
Three Spartans with varying degrees of legendary status will be among nine sports figures who will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 14, the Hall announced Monday.
Lorenzo White, Ryan Miller and Rick Comley will joins six others in being inducted on Sept. 14 at the Sound Board Theater at Detroit’s Motor City Casino Hotel.
Lorenzo White, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is Michigan State’s all-time leading rusher and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. He led Michigan State to the 1987 Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl victory over USC.
White ranked No. 2 in Big Ten history in career rushing yardage after the 1987 season and now ranks No. 9.
White finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1987, including 89 first-place votes.

In 1985, White rushed for 2,066 yards and 17 touchdowns, which ranked No. 3 in college football history at the time, trailing only Marcus Allen (2,427 yards for USC in 1981), Tony Dorsett (2,150 for Pitt in 1976) and Mike Rozier (2,148 for Nebraska in 1983). White’s mark now ranks No. 21 on the single season all-time list.
Ryan Miller, an East Lansing native, is arguably the greatest American-born goalie in the history of the hockey. In 2001, he enjoyed arguably the greatest single season by a goalie in college hockey history.

In 2001 at Michigan State, he won the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding college hockey player.
Miller recorded 26 shutouts during his career for the Spartans.
Miller played 18 seasons in the NHL, mostly with the Buffalo Sabres. Miller is one of 39 goaltenders in NHL history with 300 or more wins.
Rick Comley, of Burlington, Ontario, won national championships as a coach at Michigan State in 2007 and Northern Michigan in 1991. He was head coach of the Spartan hockey team for nine seasons. He went 186-140-39, but was fired after the 2010-2011 season. His career record 783-615-110, including 26 seasons as head coach at Northern Michigan.
The other inductees include Henrik Zetterberg (Detroit Red Wings, Richard “Rip” Hamilton (Detroit Pistons), Sierra Romero (University of Michigan softball), LaMarr Woodley (Michigan football), Mike “Doc” Emrick (hockey broadcaster) and Colleen Howe, the late wife of Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe will be honored in the contributor category.
