Michigan State's Luke Newman 'at a loss for words,' selected by Chicago Bears in NFL Draft

For the third time in four years, Michigan State had an offensive lineman selected in the NFL Draft, when Luke Newman was chosen by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round (No. 195 overall), on Saturday. Newman joins Nick Samac (2023, by the Baltimore Ravens) and AJ Arcuri (2022 by the Los Angeles Rams) as Spartan offensive linemen who have been drafted in the past four years. “I’m almost at a loss for words for a moment like this,” Newman said on Saturday. Newman (6-4, 315) started all 12 games at left guard for Michigan State in 2024 after transferring from Holy Cross. Newman started 37 straight games at Holy Cross at left tackle before moving to the interior for one season at Michigan State. “I’ve been to a draft party of a friend of mine last year (Holy Cross’s CJ Hanson) and seen him go through it,” he said. “But man, to actually experience it and to be blessed to have an opportunity in a franchise that believes in your abilities and is willing to have you grow and develop as a person and player in their building, that’s special. A lot of those people in that office have invested a lot in me. To have my name called, I can’t wait to deliver it back to them and give them all I have.”
