EAST LANSING, Mich. – In the latest edition of SpartanMag LIVE!, SpartanMag publisher Jim Comparoni goes in-depth on Michigan State’s victory at Michigan, with observations on what’s going right for the Spartans, and what still needs work.

Comparoni was joined by Nils Dekau, founder of Texas Top100, co-founder of the Juco Advocate and sports talkshow personality in the Lone Star State, to discuss the latest in Spartan basketball.

Comparoni and Dekau discussed the continued emergence of Michigan State freshman Jase Richardson as an impact player not only for this team, but in the college basketball landscape in general. A question from the SpartanMag Mailbag brought up the possibility or probability whether Richardson will leave Michigan State after his freshman season in order to join the NBA Draft.

As for Richardson’s current impact on the Spartans, Comparoni delved into Richardson’s defensive contributions during the Spartans’ victory over Michigan, including the veteran nature of his awareness as a help defender. Comparoni cited several examples during the Michigan game in which Richardson was tight into the scouting report.

Comparoni broke down Tre Holloman’s binge of three straight 3-pointers at Michigan, and pointed out that the hot streak began with Holloman moving from the point to the wing to become a first-option, go-to shooter, in a play that the Spartans used to run for Cassius Winston. Holloman hit that 3-pointer while Jeremy Fears and Richardson were on the bench. So Holloman was unquestionably playing the point guard role at that time, but Michigan State ran a set which moved him off the point, and featured him as a shooter, coming off a downscreen from Jaxon Kohler.

Comparoni and Dekau also discussed Holloman’s blossoming fearlessness as a shooter and scorer and the positive impact that is having for the Spartans.

Comparoni also talked about some of the key strengths for Maryland, in briefly looking ahead to Michigan State’s next game on Wednesday, against the surging Terrapins.

Comparoni took a question from the mailbag asking which recruits might be on tap to be the next verbal commitments for Michigan State football. Comparoni delegated that question to SpartanMag recruiting anchor Jason Killop. Killop is keeping an eye on WR Tayshon Bardo, of Mishawaka, Ind.; LB Angel Luciano, of Harrisburg, Pa.; and athlete Tyren Wortham, of Saraota, Fla., as possibilities to become Michigan State verbals at some point.
