EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State football player and SpartanMag analyst Ron “Big Moobie” Armstrong joined SpartanMag’s Jim Comparoni for the latest edition of SpartanMag LIVE!, as we get geared up for Michigan State’s game at Michigan on Saturday.

In this edition, Comparoni and Armstrong take a close look at Michigan State’s success against Iowa, including the Spartans’ physicality in the run game, and fast-flowing linebackers in run defense.

“We were winning a lot of collisions,” Armstrong said. “It starts right there. I thought we were getting after people and on both sides of the ball, we won our share of the collisions. I think that took Iowa by surprise and caught guard by how physical our interior linemen were. I thought our interior line was the probably the best game I’ve witness from Michigan State in a long time. Number 70 (Luke Newman) was mauling people. I saw (Brennan) Parachek finding work.

“Everybody just did their part. When you get everybody pulling from the same side of the rope, these things happen.”

Comparoni and Armstrong go into detail about some of the tone-setting run blocking that Michigan State established early in Saturday’s 32-20 victory over the Hawkeyes.

“I thought it all came together on Saturday, just across the board, a well-coached outfit,” Armstrong said. “We didn’t make a ton of unforced errors. We kept taking a profit, making field goals, and making an Iowa offense that can struggle at times try to make enough plays to beat us.”

Comparoni raised the question about Michigan State having 61 new players on the team and the task of indoctrinating all of them into the type of vitriol this rivalry often brings about on the field. Armstrong said that won’t be a problem.

Comparoni and Armstrong field a few mailbag questions, including this one from New Jersey Sparty: If you were Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, which Michigan quarterback would you like to see take the field for the Wolverines?

Comparoni and Armstrong settled on Alex Orji, because he makes Michigan’s offense one-dimensional. However, Comparoni and Armstrong can also see why going with Orji makes sense for the Wolverines.
