Three-star defensive back Syair Torrence decommits from Michigan State
Michigan State lost another commitment to their class of 2024 in three-star safety prospect Syair Torrence, of Syracuse (NY) Christian Brothers Academy on Oct. 15. Torrence announced his commitment via social media. Torrence was once committed to his hometown program in Syracuse, before taking an official visit to Michigan State and flipping from Syracuse. Michigan later offered Torrence in July. His other offers include Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and more.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank God for continuing to watch over myself, my family, friends, teammates, and all those closest to me,” Torrence wrote in his decommitment letter. “The current situation at Michigan State, surrounded by a lot of uncertainty, has been one I have gone back and forth about in previous weeks. After discussing with my parents and coaches, I think it is best that I consider all options for my future at the next level.
“I am officially de-committing from Michigan State and my recruitment is now 100% open. Praying I find a stable, consistent football home as my journey continues. Trusting the Lord throughout this process.”
Torrence is ranked the No. 1029 overall recruit, the No. 150 wide receiver, and the No. 7 recruit in New York by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

The decommitment comes over a month after the firing of former Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker. Torrence joins four-star safety Reggie Powers, of Dayton (OH) Centerville High School, and three-star cornerback Camren Campbell of Tampa (FL) Technical High School as the first three decommitments in the class.
Michigan State four-star offensive line commitment Andrew Dennis of Mount Pleasant (MI) High School remains committed to the Spartans. He took visits to Illinois and Purdue so far this fall, with Penn State, Auburn, Stanford, Nebraska, and others recently offering.
One of the two remaining defensive back commitments in the Spartan 2024 class, Justin Denson took an unofficial visit to Penn State over the weekend. Three-star cornerback, and the longest lasting commitment in the class, Jaylen Thompson currently remains committed.
