Trey Fort is transferring to Michigan State; how one phone call changed it all

Late at night, a week and a half ago, Trey Fort’s phone rang. He was tired, about to go to bed, and considered not answering it. But on second thought, he decided to pick it up.  On the other end of the line was Michigan State associate head basketball coach Doug Wojcik. Wojcik and the Spartan staff, after hours of research and carpet bomb scouting around the country in the transfer portal, had arrived at the decision that Fort - an athletic, strong-bodied, 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Florence, Miss., by way of Samford University - was a player Michigan State was extremely interested in.  Why the late night call? Michigan State didn’t want to waste another minute. Fort’s father, Jerry, got on the phone with Wojcik, and they had a long conversation. “I don’t know everything about how that conversation went, but they were on the phone for a good minute,” said Trey Fort. “And the feedback I got from my dad was that that conversation was a 10 out of 10. For sure.” Fort, his mother Franshell, and his father, soon planned an official visit to Michigan State for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Prior to the trip, Fort was considering taking official visits to other schools. But the feeling he and his parents received from Michigan State, the Spartan coaches and players, combined with what he witnessed as a Samford player when his team played at Breslin Center last November, made this a clear-cut decision.
