V-Cast: Carr's breakout performance gave energy Michigan State needed in pre-Christmas test against FAU
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State avoided a pre-Christmas upset thanks to monster games from Coen Carr and Jeremy Fears in a 86-69 win over Florida Atlantic. Afterward, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk checked in from courtside at the Breslin Center with the latest V-Cast.
V-CAST TOPICS
Coen Carr delivers Christmas present for Spartan fans: Sophomore wing Coen Carr delivered one of the more impressive individual performances by a Michigan State player in recent memory, finishing with a team-high 17 points, and personal best eight rebounds against FAU. Carr’s afternoon included a five dunks. Each of them was spectacular, but his euro-step dunk after an FAU turnover was one his best as a Spartan. Carr’s eventful afternoon also included a rare 3-pointer for the athletic sophomore.
Fears shows leadership in win over FAU: Jeremy Fears may have been eclipsed by Carr’s high fly theatrics, but the Spartan point guard delivered what Tom Izzo described as his best all-around game as a point guard at Michigan State. Fears scored 13 points in the win and also added eight assists to lead the way for Michigan State. He also brought a smile to his head coach’s face by showing tremendous leadership during timeouts. Fears also delivered another impressive defensive performance in this game.

Rotation: Michigan State is less than two weeks away from the resumption of Big Ten play on Jan 3 with a road game at Ohio State. With one non-conference game remaining before conference play gets underway, the Spartans still have some time to tinker with playing rotation. The Spartans have won five straight games with Tre Holloman in the starting lineup at guard with Jaden Akins and Jeremy Fears. Against FAU, Holloman played the first eight minutes before coming out of the game, beginning at shooting guard and then moving to point guard when Fears Jr. checked out. Would the Spartans be better with Holloman coming into the game at point guard fresh? That would likely mean that Jase Richardson would move to the starting line-up.
Xavier Booker: After four consecutive productive games coming off the bench, sophomore forward Xavier Booker took a step back in this game against Florida Atlantic. Booker scored only two points in 16 minutes against FAU on 1-for-7 shooting. He missed all five threes he attempted in this game. Booker’s struggles on offense appeared to adversely impact his defense in this game. His effort and energy in this game was lacking, which was a disappointment because of the way he had been playing prior to this setback.
