V-Cast: Discussing Aidan Chiles' comments, plus the present and future of Michigan State football
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State has a lot of work to do in the transfer portal to make the progress needed to get two a bowl game in year two under Jonathan Smith. After Saturday’s 41-14 loss to Rutgers on Senior Day, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk check in with the latest V-Cast.
V-CAST TOPICS
Aidan Chiles: The hot-button topic after this game was quarterback Aidan Chiles dropping vitriol on Michigan State fans in response to a question from venerable Michigan State beat-writer Jack Ebling. Was it the intent of Chiles to unload on Spartan fans in frustration for his treatment at the hands of the Michigan State fan base on social media? Perhaps the the better question is whether Chiles did more harm than good with his words? Nothing Chiles said is factually incorrect, but he probably would have been better served by not taking the path he did during the post-game press conference.

Offensive line needs to be better: Michigan State has a busy off-season ahead as it looks to take the next step forward as a program. The biggest area of concern for the Spartans at present is on the offensive line. Michigan State simply did not have the consistency in either run or pass blocking to have success in the pro-style offense that Jonathan Smith brought with him from Oregon State. With guys like Tanner Miller and Luke Newman moving out of the program, the Spartans have a lot of work to do to get the type of improvement on the offensive line to make it all work in year two. Michigan State needs both player development with returning players on the o-line, and the Spartans also need to get additional help from the transfer portal.
Recruiting: Michigan State will hold signing day on Wednesday for a limited number of high school recruits that are currently committed. When those players sign, however, they will not be signing traditional legally binding letters of intent. The biggest thing for Michigan State in recruiting will be hitting the transfer portal hard to find the type of growth-oriented individuals that the Spartans want in their program as well as individuals that can make immediate contributions. Michigan State did a nice job with transfer portal recruits during the past off-season. Can the Spartans replicate similar success and attract quality individuals like D’Quan Douse, Jordan Turner, and Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams? That is a critical priority moving forward.
