Bowl Game Aspirations: Smith say that the Spartans have a bowl game as one of their goals this season, but he did say that the hopes to win more games than he loses as a first-year head coach at Michigan State. Spartan athletic director, Alan Haller, however, indicated that he would like to see the Michigan State football team earn a bowl bid in year one under Smith. Smith may not have talked about specifics with regard to wins and losses or bowl aspirations, but he did say that he wanted to play competitive football in year one and had no patience for anything less than that.

Optimism for the O-Line: Comparoni asked a question about the o-line of Smith during the podium of Wednesday’s press conference. Smith answered the question by expressing faith in o-line coach Jim Michalczik and indicated the Spartan are cross-training o-lineman to create depth and versatility up front. Later during break-out sessions, Smith shared his optimistic outlook for the o-line without being asked a direct question about the group. Smith appears to believe there is more returning talent on the o-line than most people believe there to be.
Off-Season Conditioning: Michigan State released their preseason roster with some notable movement. Offensive lineman Gavin Broscious and defensive lineman D’Quan Douse made noteworthy weight gains. Offensive lineman Mercer Luniewski shed the most weight. It is also worth mentioning that most of the defensive backs on the Spartan roster are lighter than the were in the spring.
