Indianapolis, Ind. – Michigan State coach Mel Tucker, and student athletes Cal Haladay, Tre Mosley,  and JD Duplain were at Lucas Oil Stadium on Wednesday for Big Ten Media Days. After podium interviews and breakout session, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk checked in from the field for the latest news, notes, and opinion from Big Ten Media Days.

Topics touched upon include:

Tucker relaxed, confident: Tucker seemed more comfortable talking about his football team and doing so in an unscripted manner. He exuded a quiet confidence when talking about Michigan State. He obviously believes that the group has the potential to outperform expectations, which are admittedly low coming off a 5-7 season in 2022.

“We have competition at every single position, and probably no doubt the most talent that we’ve had top to bottom on our roster,” Tucker said. “We needed more quality depth on our roster, and we addressed that this out of season. I believe competition forces you to be at your best each and every day, and that’s how we’ll reach our full potential.”

Michigan State Sizing Up: Tucker lauded the increased size and depth on the Michigan State front seven. The Spartans added several physically mature 6-foot-5, 300-pound plus defensive tackles. Jalen Sami is among the new faces on the Spartan interior defensive line. Sami, a late addition to the class from Colorado was a must-have for Michigan State.

Improved Chemistry: The Spartans made a concerted effort to engage in more team-building activities during the off-season. Tucker believes that team chemistry suffered last season as the result of renovations that kept players out of the locker room at the football building.

Talent and Competition: Tucker made it clear during interviews on Wednesday Michigan State has upgraded competition and the talent level at several positions on both sides of the football. Tucker believes this is the most talented roster that he has had during his time as Michigan State football coach.
