Michigan Wolverines basketball finished tied with Maryland for second place in the Big Ten standings and is the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament this week at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Maize and Blue will be the last of the 15 Big Ten Tournament participants to take the floor for the first time this week, set to play in the late game Friday evening (around 9 p.m. ET tip-off). Michigan will take on No. 6 seed Purdue, No. 11 seed Rutgers or No. 14 seed USC. Rutgers and USC will face off Wednesday night, with the winner to play Purdue Thursday evening.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Michigan (+1600) has the seventh-best odds to win the Big Ten Tournament — despite being one of four teams with a double-bye — behind Michigan State (+250), Maryland (+370), Wisconsin (+600), Illinois (+750), Purdue (+750) and UCLA (+750). The Wolverines’ chances are tied with Oregon (+1600).

There’s a big drop off between Michigan and Oregon and the rest of the field, with the next team — Indiana — sitting with +4000 odds and Ohio State checking in at +5000.

Michigan is 1-1 versus Purdue, 2-0 against Rutgers and 1-0 versus USC. However, the Wolverines lost by 27 to the Boilermakers in West Lafayette and only won by two points in Ann Arbor, meaning their point differential is minus-25 across the two meetings.

The winner of Michigan’s first Big Ten Tournament game will take on one of No. 2 seed Maryland, No. 7 seed Illinois, No. 10 seed Ohio State or No. 15 seed Iowa.

Michigan has lost four of its last six games, including each of its last three, but enters the postseason with a clean slate. The Wolverines are 22-9 overall and went 14-6 in Big Ten play, with optimism that they have a higher gear to reach.

“Well, it looks like the clouds have parted and the sun is out,” first-year head coach Dusty May said Monday. “And we’re ready for a postseason run, and to play our best basketball when it means the most here in March.”
