Michigan senior quarterback Cade McNamara has taken a beating in the non-conference portion of the season, and it came to a head Saturday. McNamara, subbing in for starter J.J. McCarthy with U-M up 38-0 near the end of the first half, took a vicious hit that will cost him at least a few weeks.

Post-Game Reactions

McNamara held on to the ball a bit long, and pressure over right tackle resulted in a big hit on the side of his leg. He appeared to be in pain in other parts of his body, as well.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the team would be without McNamara for a while.

“Cade, unfortunately I think his foot was caught in the ground, got hit on the side of the leg. He’s probably going to be out for a few weeks,” Harbaugh said. “It’s not going to be a season-ending thing, I don’t think. He’ll miss some time.”

Harbaugh isn’t certain who the backup will be, but it’s likely sophomore Davis Warren or grad transfer Alan Bowman. Neither has played much at Michigan, though Bowman had extensive playing time at Texas Tech.

“We’ll decide,” Harbaugh said. “They’re both [options]. You see we’ve been playing them both an equal amount of time.

“All options will be open. [Freshman] Alex Orji, too. Don’t forget Alex. He’s right there in the mix.”

Harbaugh talks Donovan Edwards, other Michigan injuries

Sophomore running back Donovan Edwards, meanwhile, missed the game with a lower leg injury. Harbaugh confirmed he shouldn’t be out long.

“Donovan, we’ll see what his status would be … questionable or probable for next week,” he said. “One of the two. Call it questionable on the safe side. He’s doing good. He’s getting better.”

Veteran left guard Trevor Keegan, meanwhile, missed most of the game with an injury. He was in street clothes by the end of the game and replaced by sophomore Giovanni El-Hadi.

“I don’t know (on Keegan). I’ll find out after the [press conference],” he said. “I don’t think he has anything long term.”
