Donovan Edwards on Michigan WR commit Semaj Morgan: "He has that dog mentality"
It’s no secret Michigan has a strong connection to West Bloomfield, one of the state’s premier high school programs.
The Wolverines hired former West Bloomfield head coach Ron Bellamy as their wide receivers coach after he led the program to a state championship in January of 2021. Just a month before that, Michigan made a huge splash on the recruiting trail by landing Top 100 West Bloomfield running back Donovan Edwards.
Now, Semaj Morgan is keeping the pipeline flowing.
The three-star West Bloomfield wide receiver committed to Michigan in early December is one of the cornerstones of U-M’s 2023 recruiting class.
“I’m excited to play with Semaj again,” Edwards said. “I feel like his class and the 2022 class are going to impact Michigan in a positive way. A player like Semaj is someone you build camaraderie around. We’ve played together for a long time. I think I was in second grade, and he was in kindergarten, and we played all the way up to high school.
“That’s like my brother. I call his father Coach Semaj. He’s like an uncle to me. That’s like family.”
Edwards is entering his sophomore campaign with high expectations and has been hard at work this offseason. However, Edwards has also taken time out of his busy schedule to help Michigan on the recruiting trail.
He recently spent a weekend with Morgan and five-star quarterback target Dante Moore. Edwards pitched Moore hard on joining the Michigan family and also had fun reconnecting with Morgan.
As Edwards mentioned, he can’t wait for Morgan to join him in Ann Arbor. After all, Morgan will be another welcomed piece to an offense that has the potential to be extremely explosive in the near future.

“(Semaj) is versatile,” Edwards said. “He’s a dog. He has that dog mentality. He’s going to give you everything he has. He never lets up. He’s not going to take no for an answer. He doesn’t let anyone persuade him away from what he’s trying to do and accomplish. That’s what Michigan fans should look forward to. He’s a really exciting player.”
At 5-foot-9, 178 pounds, Morgan is ranked as the No. 69 wide receiver and No. 479 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Consensus.
Morgan is part of a six-man Michigan recruiting class that ranks No. 19 nationally.
