ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan found another gear to its offense against Hawai’i Saturday night in Ann Arbor. Rainbow Warriors head coach Timmy Chang believes it could be enough to put the Wolverines back in playoff contention.

Michigan led Hawai’i at the half, 42-0, and probably could have won by 80 had head coach Jim Harbaugh not called off the dogs. Instead, U-M settled for a 56-10 win in which over 100 players saw action.

“There’s a reason they were in the College Football Playoff last year and are No. 4 in the country right now,” Hawai’i head coach Timmy Chang said. “They’re going to be good this year. They’re going to give a lot of teams a handful.”

Especially if quarterback J.J. McCarthy continues to play the way he did Saturday night. The Michigan sophomore completed 11 of his 12 passes, and all of them but one were on the money. The one that missed, just a hair behind fifth-year receiver Ronnie Bell, should have been caught, and the long balls he threw were on a dime.

McCarthy also kept once on a 16-yard gain, checked down when necessary and was in complete control throughout.

“He did an unbelievable job today,” Chang said. “He had a really great game. Hats off to him.

“Kids that can run present different challenges. You can call different plays. He did everything well. He made some good throws deep, he made some great throws on the run, and he used his legs.”

The Wolverines amassed 410 yards of offense in the first half alone. McCarthy was the biggest reason for that, though the Michigan running game was working, too.

On the other side, the Rainbow Warriors simply had nowhere to move. The Michigan defense swarmed the ball all night and held Hawai’i under 50 yards of offense in the first half. They put up 10 points in the second half against the Wolverines’ backups, but the game had long since been over.

Chang played for some winners in the past, and he knows one when he sees one. He believes Michigan is legit.

“They looked the part,” he said. “They caused problems for us and they’re going to cause problems for a lot of teams. As good as they are, they’re contenders.”
