<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When John Beilein abruptly retired at the end of the 2018-19 Michigan basketball season, the program unexpectedly — and immediately — found itself at a crossroads. Though Beilein left the program in impeccable shape, the timing wasn't great. Most of the other jobs had already been filled, and some coaches who might have been in the mix simply weren't. Juwan Howard's name surfaced immediately, to mixed reactions. His former Fab Five teammate and current ESPN analyst Jalen Rose advocated for him immediately. Some, like analyst Mike Francesa — well, didn't.
