Hunter Dickinson takes in a Detroit Tigers game, reveals latest on decision
Michigan men’s basketball center Hunter Dickinson escaped from Ann Arbor on Monday evening for a trip to a baseball game. The star sophomore was in attendance for the game between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox from Comerica Park. The Tigers won the game 3-1 thanks to a Javier Baez two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dickinson is a Washington Nationals fan by trade, but was the star of the day off the field in Detroit. The ballpark’s in-game entertainment crew revealed his attendance via a doppelganger cam segment early in the contest.
“Yes. I’m a huge baseball fan,” Dickinson said in an interview with Mickey York of Bally Sports Detroit. “I’m a big [Washington Nationals] fan, but they made some moves that kind of made me a little upset, so I think I’m an honorary Tigers fan now. Max Scherzer was my guy and he was a Tiger before he was a Nat so I think it only makes sense.”
Dickinson grew up playing the game, but eventually sized out of it and turned his attention to basketball. His support of local teams has been strong since arriving at Michigan. Dickinson made a cameo appearance at the Little League World Series this year to support eventual champion Taylor North, who is headquartered 25-minutes east of Ann Arbor.
“I played [baseball] a good amount, especially during middle school,” Dickinson said. “I really loved baseball. When I really started growing and got close to seven feet, I had to give it up and start focusing on basketball again.
“I might have to talk to some people at Michigan and tryout for the baseball team. I swung at everything, so you only had three pitches with me. You had to get me out really fast.”
The latest on Hunter Dickinson’s basketball future
The elephant in the room is Dickinson’s decision on whether to go pro or return to Michigan for his junior season. He just returned from a self-imposed hoops hiatus but says clarity on his future is coming.

“After the season, I took two weeks off of basketball, not worrying about anything,” Dickinson said. “I’ve just started getting back to basketball, thinking about it. I haven’t made a decision yet but I plan on making one relatively soon.”
Dickinson’s day at the ballpark was part of the escape and de-stressing plan. He seems a safe bet to make appearances as more as long as he is in the area.
“I try to come as much as I can because I love baseball. The atmosphere here is really fun. Just to get away from Ann Arbor is really fun. I try to get to as many games as I can.”
Dickinson averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Wolverines this season. Michigan finished with a 19-15 record but advanced to the program’s fifth-straight Sweet 16. The season ended in a 63-55 loss to Villanova.
