Jett Howard, movie star? That might be premature, but the incoming Michigan basketball freshman has been tabbed to play Carmelo Anthony in a film about LeBron James and others called “Shooting Stars.”

Class of 2023 standout Mookie Cook, an Oregon pledge, will play LeBron James. The 6-7, 200-pounder is the No. 6 player in the On3 consensus.

Howard, son of Michigan coach and former Fab Five standout Juwan Howard, is On3.com’s No. 36 consensus player nationally.

Filming for the movie, which is based on the novel by James and Buzz Bissinger, starts this week in locations around Ohio. It’s the story of young LeBron James and his high school teammates in Akron while they battled to win a title. Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger ThingsAlgee Smith of Euphoria fame and several more up-and-coming names in Hollywood are also in the movie.

The Universal production won’t be in theaters. The movie will go straight to Peacock’s streaming services, per NBC Universal.

Per ComicBook.com: Shooting Stars chronicles how James and his best friends in Akron formed a close-knit bond that sustained them first through a failed national championship tournament to winning a title by the end of high school. Along the way, there were plenty of tests, such as broken homes, jealousies, and even James’ own mega-success

“Was it insane for a high school basketball team to jet around the country?” James wrote in Shooting Stars. “At the time I thought it was exciting, going to places I never ever thought I would get to see in my life when I was a scared, lonely young boy. Now, I believe it was excessive.”

Jett Howard ready to shine at Michigan

Howard has always been a high profile recruit, but it went up a notch when he earned MVP honors at the Iverson Classic in Memphis recently.

“It was just fun,” Howard said. “I just tried to have the most fun with it — listen to my coaches and play hard.”

His future Michigan coach and father, Juwan Howard, was in attendance. He saw his son score and distribute … and impress.

“He’s the most pro-ready right now,” analyst J.R. Smith said.

That might be debatable, but the Wolverines are thrilled to have him. Howard is a gem of a person in addition to being a great young basketball player, assistant Phil Martelli told us in a recent exclusive.

“Jett deserved to be recruited, and he deserved to go though the process,” Martelli said. “People always say, that was a given [for Michigan]. No, that wasn’t a given. That was work. I respect him for that, and I respect Juwan and [wife] Jenine for letting him have the proces

He just keeps getting bigger and better, Martelli said.

“I think he gets more fit every time I see him. And look, we need outside shooting,” Martelli said. “We need outside shooting.”

They’ll get that and a guy with an acting credit to his name when Howard arrives on campus.
