Michigan football offensive coordinator Josh Gattis is leaving Ann Arbor for the same position with the Miami Hurricanes according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and The Athletic. Interest in Gattis was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Gattis came to Michigan in 2019 from Alabama and spent the last three seasons helming the Michigan offense. He won the Broyles Award this past season for the top assistant coach in college football following a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff appearance.

“I stand before you because Jim Harbaugh took a risk,” Gattis said during his Broyles Award speech. “Jim Harbaugh took a risk three years ago. He hired a long-time wide receivers coach, that was a co-offensive coordinator at the time — and he gave me my first opportunity to be an offensive coordinator. One of the very few minority offensive coordinators in college football. It’s an honor.

“We started off great — 2019 was amazing. And then we faced adversity in 2020. If anyone’s followed the Michigan football program, a lot of things went wrong in the past year. When I think about the past twelve months, I stand before you so honored because for a lot of people out there — they didn’t believe we belonged there. They didn’t believe I belonged there. They didn’t believe that I was the right man leading our program offensively. And I’m forever grateful for Coach Harbaugh because he believed in me. When you have that type of support from your head coach, that means the world.”

Miami is undergoing a change in leadership with former Oregon coach Mario Cristobol taking over as head coach. Gattis previously interviewed for head coaching vacancies at Duke and Virginia and was a potential internal candidate if Jim Harbaugh moved on to the NFL.

With Gattis’ departure, Michigan must replace both of its coordinators from last season. Mike Macdonald left his post as defensive coordinator in January for the same job with the Baltimore Ravens. A replacement has yet to be named.

Quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, running backs coach Mike Hart and offensive line coach/co-offensive coordinator would be internal candidates to replace Gattis, but a further search could take place.

Michigan finished 25th in total offense this season, headlined by an elite rushing attack. The Wolverines finished 15th in rush offense at 214.4 yards per game. Michigan’s passing attack ranked 68th in the country at 228.7 air yards per contest.
