Michigan head basketball coach Juwan Howard will miss the final five games of the regular season after Sunday’s incident at Wisconsin, according to punishments handed down on Monday night. He was also fined $40,000. Michigan forwards Terrance Williams and Moussa Diabate were suspended for Wednesday night’s game at Rutgers.

Associate head coach Phil Martelli will serve as acting head coach during Howard’s absence, which expires during the Big Ten Tournament.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed the suspension quickly after the Howard news dropped. The penalty felt justified to Balas.

“We said on the message board that it was probably going to be Michigan that levied this suspension against Howard and the players and that his was probably going to be for the season,” Balas said. “I think it’s a pretty harsh suspension. This is probably pretty appropriate, to be honest with you based on what happened. If [Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft] didn’t get in there, he probably would have a $10,000 fine and this thing would be over. He got in there and did some unnecessary things. But it is what it is.

“It’s in the past. This will go away in a couple of weeks. Is it a stain on Juwan Howard’s career? Yeah. Last year you had the thing with Mark Turgeon at Maryland. There are lines you can’t cross. It is an emotional game and emotional time. There is no excuse to throw a fist or a hand.”
