Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh addressed recruits Thursday at the Sound Mind Sound Body Michigan Showcase and ultimately gave his thoughts (or lack there of) on the ongoing NIL debate within college football.

Harbaugh spoke to the up-and-coming talent while featured on a panel alongside multiple other head coaches from across the country including Minnesota’s PJ Fleck and Penn State’s James Franklin. On300 2024 wide receiver I’Marion Stewart, 2025 quarterback target Bryce Underwood and Michigan wide receiver commit Semaj Morgan were among the notable prospects in attendance.

“Don’t get the big head,” Harbaugh advised the athletes. “That’s a trap. That is a deep, dark and lonely trap. So, how do you know if you’ve got the big head? If you don’t think there’s any more room for improvement, chances are you’ve got a big head. Hopefully that means something. It means a lot to me that you guys are all here. Where else would you rather be, right? I know as a football coach there’s nowhere I’d rather be than watching guys play football.”

Harbaugh on Michigan NIL/recruiting

No one knows if the Nick Saban-Jimbo Fisher feud is over just yet, but similar debates continue between coaches, players and fans alike. However, Harbaugh didn’t have much to say on the issue. In few words, Michigan’s intentions were made clear.

“I don’t know how much or that I really have an opinion on that, right or wrong,” Harbaugh said. “Our philosophy’s coming to the University of Michigan is still going to be a transformational experience, rather than a transactional experience.”

On if something ‘needs to be done’ with NIL: “I don’t know. I’ve always been for student-athletes being able to profit off their name, image and likeness. I think that… it just makes sense, right? We could say that the sale of a jersey for example, who should have some share of the profit – the actual person whose jersey it is, rather than just the institution? I think we can all agree that’s something that’s fair and right.”
