When Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart isn’t kicking it with recruits, he’s sure to kick off the new season with a great cause. Hart stopped by AFC Ann Arbor, a community soccer club and founding member of the CLR Academy, to watch training this week and help engage the state’s youth.

The CLR Academy launched in June 2021 to impact underserved communities in Michigan with a free weekly program focusing on numerous sports along with reading, writing and wellness – a mission that Hart sponsors proudly. Sports such as soccer, basketball, football and yoga are used to facilitate positive interactions for K-8 youth and introduce them to necessarily life lessons. Snacks, equipment and books are free for all participants.

AFC Ann Arbor is among the handful of organizations who helped make this much-needed initiative a reality. Although the soccer club didn’t see any action during the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both the men’s and women’s teams will be active throughout 2022.

Led by Hart and NFL veteran Latavius Murray, who joined forces in 2020 to better serve Black youth in New York, the Hart & Tay Train Foundation is another integral group in this partnership.

Michigan Made: AFC Ann Arbor, CLR Academy

Via afcannarbor.com: “Association Football Club Ann Arbor (AFC Ann Arbor) was founded in 2014 with the goal of creating a community based club that would promote the game on a larger scale. The club was launched by a number of community members including former players, entrepreneurs, fans and families, creating a diverse ownership group, reflective of the greater Ann Arbor community.”

Via clracademy.org: “CLR Academy was created in partnership by Washtenaw My Brother’s Keeper & AFC Ann Arbor, the Rob Murphy Foundation, the Hart & Tay Train Foundation and The Mighty Oak Project. These organizations came together to build a community focused wellness project, aimed at developing leadership skills and revolutionary thinking for young residents of Sycamore Meadows in Ypsilanti, MI.”
