Michigan has added yet another player from a position of need from the transfer portal. Indiana quarterback Jack Tuttle, who played sparingly this year, will join the Wolverines next season.

Tuttle is expected to compete with Davis Warren for the backup spot behind J.J. McCarthy, who will be a junior next year. The Wolverines were looking to add depth to the position after Alan Bowman announced he’d be entering the portal earlier this month.

A 6-4, 210-pounder out of San Marcos (Cali.) Mission Hills, Tuttle — a sixth-year next season — started four career games and threw for 819 yards and four touchdowns, but he was never able to unseat a healthy Michael Penix for the starting job in Bloomington.

Tuttle was expected to remain No. 2 on the depth chart behind Connor Bazelak in October, at which point he announced he’d transfer at the end of the year.

“We had an open, honest talk about his time here and he has a desire to want to play his final year,” Allen said. “I appreciate that. He’s been a great leader for us. I have a lot of love and respect for Jack. He’s earned two degrees here. It’s a unique situation, for sure, but I think it [staying this season] speaks to his character and what we’re all about here.”

Tuttle made four starts after transferring from Utah in 2019. He replaced Penix after he got injured  in the sixth game of the eight-game 2020 season and closed out that year as the starter, and then started in losses to Michigan and Ohio State last year.

Tuttle has completed 104 of 182 passes for 819 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions during his career with the Hoosiers.
