Newsstand: Aidan Hutchinson suffers major injury in Week 7
The slate of NFL games this weekend was headlined by Michigan Wolverines alum and Detroit Lions star Aidan Hutchinson suffering a gruesome leg injury in a 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Hutchinson broke his leg after making contact with teammate Alim McNeil.
He stayed in Dallas after emergency surgery, which is expected to keep him out of the remainder of the 2024 season. Hutchinson has a broken tibia, per reports, which would keep him out approximately 8-10 months.
“It’s tough. He’s in good hands right now. He’s being taken care of. He’ll stay back here. Obviously, he’s going to be down for a little while. That’s tough. It’s hard to lose someone like him but we’ll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best,” head coach Dan Campbell said.
Hutchinson was the odds-on favorite to win the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award coming into Sunday’s game and has a league-high 7.5 sacks on the season. He is the heartbeat of Detroit’s defense, much like he was at Michigan.

“It’s obvious how good he is and how great of a player he is on the field and what he does for our team schematically and what type of season he was having,” teammate Alex Anzalone said. “Just to see him in that situation it kind of just brings you back down to earth. We’re playing a violent and dangerous sport … to see him go out like that is tough just from a human aspect.”

Michigan quote of the day
“I had a couple ablations, one in 1999 and one in 2012. I’ll always remember the one in 2012, it was during the Monday night game. Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers versus the Chicago Bears, and Colin had a great night that night. … After the game, got checked out. Ended up having to have an ablation for that one because it didn’t go back into rhythm, but 2-0 with arrhythmias.”
