Michigan hockey alum Matty Beniers, the No. 2 overall pick in last spring’s NHL Draft, made his debut for the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night. Saturday night was his moment to shine as he continues to get his feet wet in the pros.

A crowd of 17,151 saw Beniers debut as the centerpiece of the franchise moving forward, scoring his first career goal in a 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils.

Beniers’ goal put the Kraken ahead 3-2 and came on his third shot of the game. Seattle had previously been down 2-1 after the first period.

“The Kraken hope it is just the first of many for a player whose arrival has pumped some juice into the final weeks of a season that began with optimism but too quickly was met with the realities of life as an expansion team,” Seattle Times writer Bob Condotta wrote.

“Beniers, who had an assist in 17 minutes, 10 seconds ice time in his debut Tuesday at Calgary, started on a line with Ryan Donato and Jordan Ebberle and made an impact from the start, winning the opening faceoff against Dawson Mercer, a first-round pick of the Devils in 2020.”

Beniers had 12 goals and 14 assists in 18 games this season for Michigan and was a finalist for Big Ten Player of the Year. He was also the alternate captain on a group that made a run to the Frozen Four, losing to Denver in overtime on April 7.

Michigan quote of the day

“We’ve got to be better. When you’re a champion, all the other teams are scouting you. There’s a target on the back there in everything you do. Every run blocking scheme, every pass-protecting scheme … they’re already studying, but it amplifies that much more. You become the red-letter game. The game they have to win, need to win and want to win. Yeah, more of a target not he back that way, so yeah, need to be better.”
