The long-awaited decision from former Michigan Wolverines center Hunter Dickinson has come. The most sought-after player in the transfer portal era is heading to Kansas.

Dickinson’s announcement came via social media and On3’s Joe Tipton.

Dickinson’s transfer portal recruitment was a wide-ranging national courtship. Villanova, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland and Georgetown were the schools most often mentioned for his services. A return to Michigan was never officially ruled out, but never seemed all that likely.

Dickinson averaged 18.5 points, 9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game this past season. He shot 56 percent from the field and a career-best 42.1 percent from three-point range. Dickinson averaged 17.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists along with 149 career blocks in his Wolverine career and was the eighth Michigan player to put up 1,500-plus points and 750-plus rebounds total.

Dickinson was largely seen as the face of the Juwan Howard era at Michigan, but now leaves a gaping hole in the starting lineup. The two achieved plenty together, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2021 and Sweet Sixteen in 2022. He was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2021 and a consensus second-team All-American that same year. He earned All-Big Ten honors in each of his seasons with the Wolverines.

“Today is bittersweet,” Howard said after Dickinson entered the portal. “While Hunter Dickinson’s departure is unfortunate, there are so many reasons to be thankful for and celebrate. This young man has accomplished so much in his three seasons.

“Statistics aside, Hunter helped us to a Big Ten title, back-to-back Sweet 16s, as well as a memorable Elite Eight run. These are memories that will last a lifetime. What I love most is he was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree, twice. That says so much about his character and maturity. As much as I tried to instill in him, he was a guide and inspiration for me.

“We wish Hunter and his family all the best in the future.”

Michigan currently has a pair of scholarship spots available for the 2023-24 season. It has been a busy offseason in the transfer portal for the Wolverines, adding North Carolina guard Caleb Love, Seton Hall forward Tray Jackson and Alabama guard Nimari Burnett. Dickinson, wing Isaiah Barnes and forward Gregg Glenn all transferred out, while Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin went to the 2023 NBA Draft.
