Michigan basketball draws UC-San Diego in the NCAA Tournament as a 5 seed

Michigan basketball won eight games a year ago and faced what many expected to be a potentially long rebuild. Instead head coach Dusty May led the Wolverines to a Big Ten Tournament championship (game) in his first year and back to the NCAA Tournament as a 5 seed.
The Wolverines will take on UC-San Diego, the No. 12 seed, Thursday in Denver. The winner of that game will play the winner of Texas A&M in Yale in round two.
Michigan is headed back to the tournament for the first time since 2022, when the Juwan Howard-led Wolverines beat Colorado State and Tennessee before losing to Villanova in the Sweet 16. This year’s Wolverines are in the South Regional, hoping to advance to Atlanta for round two. Auburn and Michigan State are the top two seeds in that region.
May takes U-M there as the Big Ten champion after a 59-53 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament title game Sunday. He said recently he’s already enjoyed the season in his first year.

“Wisconsin, they’ve been around all year. Those guys, they’ve got really good players,” May said. “Obviously it’s a well-coached team. It’s a great program and system and culture that they have established over the last 30 years or whatnot. So I couldn’t have more respect or admiration …
“But this league’s been a blast. Being here, the crowd, the energy, everyone around, the league’s been incredible with everything just being laid out. We’ve had fun. Obviously when you’re winning, it’s a lot more fun. It’s been a great league season, 20 games. I don’t know if any coach — we might want to shrink that — I’m joking. Twenty games is a lot, but it’s great for the sport, great for our guys to play in such meaningful games. We’ll reflect on a lot more of that after the season.”
