WATCH: Breaking down the Dusty May hire, who he brings with him, spring ball talk and more
The Michigan Wolverines have a new head men’s basketball coach in Dusty May, who will be introduced to the media on Tuesday afternoon in Ann Arbor. It took a streamlined effort to get the job done, but U-M leaves the coaching search with a guy who was the consensus top name in the cycle.
TheWolverine.com‘s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed the process that led May to Ann Arbor, which included athletic director Warde Manuel and former head coach John Beilein closing the deal in Florida and landing the big fish.
“We know that he loves Beilein,” Balas said. “And one of the guys that was a good friend of his that used to work with him and is a friend of mine said that he used to use Beilein stuff and send it to him when they would compare notes. He studied John Beilein and has great respect for him. So him being there was absolutely huge.
“No matter what anybody tells you, Beilein should be the consigliere of this program. Like Jay Wright at Villanova. Like Tom Izzo will be at Michigan State. People are going to hold that half season in Cleveland against him when he had his own heart issues and stuff like that. Feel free. But that was the golden age of Michigan basketball.

“But anyway, they go down there, and hey have their conversations. Beilein had his questions. Warde Manuel had his questions. And Dusty May had his questions. The interview went late, fellas. And at about 9:45, we got a text that Dusty’s done at the same time a Woj bomb for ESPN and said that Dusty May was going to be the next Michigan coach.
“Just a fantastic get. I think he’s a great fit. Everything we’ve heard about him is that he’s a great fit. An outstanding person and is a basketball junkie who is going to work like crazy. My buddy who worked with him told me that he’s gonna hit like Bo Schembechler hit the Michigan football program in 1969. Relentless and with a will to win immediately. It sounds like he could very well bring several of his Florida Atlantic players with him. We know that he is gonna hit the portal as well, so very good hire. Was number 1A on the list. They got him. Congratulations to Michigan. This is a huge hire and I think that he’s gonna do a great job here.”
