Michigan basketball falls 94-86 to Long Beach State
The Michigan Wolverines fell to 3-1 on the season on Friday night at Crisler Center, dropping 94-86 contest to the visiting Long Beach State 49ers. Defensive stops were hard to come by on Friday night, and it cost U-M dearly in a game that it paid an opponent to show up for.
Long Beach State’s Marcus Tsohonis led all scorers with 35 points, while Olivier Nkamhoua led the Wolverines with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Dug McDaniel had 20 points on the evening.

First half
Michigan kicked off the game with a three-pointer from McDaniel 16 seconds into the game, which signified a hot start to come. The Wolverines would lead 17-5 at the under-16 timeout before ballooning the lead to 24-7 at 13:16 after McDaniel’s second three-pointer of the night. Long Beach State rattled off an 8-0 run at 11:30 to get the deficit back down to 23-15 in favor of Michigan.
Michigan was able to get its lead back at 28-15 with 10:45 to go, and that’s where Long Beach State started the claw its way back into the game and got the U-M lead down to 34-26 at the under-8 media timeout. Tarris Reed’s layup at 7:38 helped the lead back up to 34-24 with 7:34 to go and that would be the last time the Wolverines led by double digits in the game.
Long Beach State would spend the latter stages of the first half climbing back into the contest and ultimately would head into the locker room down 50-48. Defensive stops were hard to come by in the first half, but the Wolverines were still able to hold onto a two-point halftime lead.

Second Half
Reed got the scoring started for Michigan in the second half just under a minute in, extending their lead to 52-48 at 18:56. Long Beach State charged back ahead on a 6-0 run, taking a 54-52 lead at 17:16. Terrance Williams hit a three-pointer to give Michigan the lead back at 55-54 and a jumper from Olivier Nkamhoua pushed the lead back to four with 16:36 to play.
Over the next few new minutes, the teams would go back and forth and trade a one-point lead. Long Beach State would eventually push its lead to 69-64 with 12:30 to go and got its lead up to 71-65 with 10:40 remaining.
Long Beach State hed a led into the final six minutes of the game, where Michigan finally got some momentum and the lead back. The Wolverines would lead by four points at 80-76 with 4:28 to play. Nkamhoua’s lauip with 2:39 remaining would give Michigan its final lead of the night at 82-81. The 49ers would grab a five-point lead with under a minute to go and never look back.
When the clocks hit zero, Michigan was dealt its first loss of the year by a score of 94-86.

Next up is the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, where Michigan will open with Memphis on Wednesday. The Wolverines will play three games in three days.
