Michigan grabs win over Stanford in second Battle 4 Atlantis tilt
Michigan Wolverines basketball (4-2) played its second game in as many days in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas on Thursday night and walked out with an 83-75 win over Stanford. With the victory, U-M advances to the 5th-place game on Friday against Texas Tech.
All five Michigan starters were in double figures on Thursday night, headlined by 20 points and 8 assists from sophomore point guard Dug McDaniel. Senior forward Terrance Williams II had 17 points of his own, graduate forward Olivier Nkamhoua chipped in with 16 points, and sophomore center Tarris Reed and graduate guard Nimari Burnett had 11 and 10, respectively.
Michigan’s Texas Tech tilt is tentatively set for 6 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon.
First half
Michigan came out flat early on in the game. Sophomore center Tarris Reed grabbed the first bucket of the game, but Stanford would get off to a quick stat and out to an 11-point lead at 17-6 at the 14:32 mark of the first half. Michigan would trim the lead down to eight at the 13:49 mark thanks to an Olivier Nkamhoua free throw and Nimari Burnett layup, narrowing the deficit to 17-9. A pair of threes from the Cardinal pushed the lead to a game-high 14 points at 23-9, but Michigan would start to put it together and had a run of its own that followed.
Michigan exploded for seven quick points thanks to a jumper from Dug McDaniel, a three-pointer from Will Tschetter and a dunk from Tray Jackson. A Stanford three from Jared Bynum pushed the lead back to 26-16 before a 9-0 run from Michigan thanks to a three from Burnett, a pair of buckets from McDaniel and a jumper from Nkamhoua. The Wolverines trailed 26-25 at the 8:50 mark of the first half.
Michigan took its first lead since the opening minute on a three from Terrance Williams III and a dunk from Reed, helping them pull in from 30-28 with 6:31 to play in the half. A Stanford 5-0 run helped them pull back ahead at 33-30 at the 5:30 mark. Nkamhoua tied the game at 33-33 at the 5:00 mark.

The teams would trade buckets throughout the rest of the half, but Michigan would pull ahead heading into the locker room up 45-44.
Second half
Stanford’s Michael Jones scored the first eight points of the half and helped the Cardinals out to a 52-45 lead with 18:37 to go in the game. Michigan’s biggest counterpunch to that point followed with a 13-0 run with baskets from Reed, Burnett, McDaniel and Nkamhoua chipping in. The Wolverines would lead 58-52 with 14:58 remaining. Stanford killed the run with a layup before a nine-point burst from Michigan to go up 67-54 with 12:24 left thanks to made shots from Nkamhoua and a three-pointer by Williams. Bynum stopped the scoring run at the 10:07 mark at 67-57 before a Reed free throw made it 68-57.
Stanford was not done yet, though. The Cardinal rattled off an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 68-65 with 6:59 to go. A pair of McDaniel free throws stretched the lead to 70-65 before a 4-0 Stanford run to slice the Michigan deficit to 70-69 at 5:41. At the final media timeout, the Wolverines held a 76-72 lead.
McDaniel hit a jumper and Williams hit a free throw to push the Michigan lead to 79-72 with 35 seconds left. Stanford’s Bynum hit a three to narrow the deficit to 79-75 with 25 seconds to go before a Michigan timeout. McDaniel was fouled and hit both free throws with just over 20 seconds to go. Williams was fouled with 13 seconds to go and hit both his free throws, extending the lead to 83-75. Bynum got to the basket for a layup and a foul shot and made it. The game would end with Michigan up 83-78.
