Newsstand: Highlights from Michigan PG Dug McDaniel's stellar starting debut
Tweets Of The Day
Michigan will be without graduate point guard Jaelin Llewellyn for the rest of the season, testing the Wolverines’ guard depth and thrusting freshman Dug McDaniel into a starting position. Michigan hasn’t had a freshman full-time starter at the position since Derrick Walton Jr. back in 2013-14.
McDaniel started his first career game Thursday night against Minnesota and was outstanding.
The Michigan freshman hit three triples and poured in 15 points (5-of-6 shooting from the field) with 2 made free throws. It was a positive to see he could knock down deep jump shots when left open. The most impressive aspect of his performance, though, was his 7 assists.
We saw that on display in this one. His 7 assists were the most by a Michigan freshman point guard in a Big Ten game since Trey Burke had 8 against Indiana Jan. 5, 2012.
Three Michigan football players were named All-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America — running back Blake Corum, center Olusegun Oluwatimi and EDGE Mike Morris. Corum was a first-team All-Big Ten pick, finalist for the Doak Walker Award (most outstanding running back) and finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting. Oluwatimi won the Rimington Trophy (nation’s top center) and was honored with the Outland Trophy (country’s best interior lineman on either side of the ball). Morris was named a first-team All-Big Ten honoree and the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Dametrius “Meechie” Walker – a former Muskegon High School football recruit and Michigan honoree this past season – passed away this week after a battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer in his leg.
Walker was a 2022 recruit that had to quit football due to his cancer and eventually had his left leg amputated. Dating back to this summer, he was in hospice care when Michigan brought him in during fall camp to score a touchdown on the field at the Big House.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Dametrius Walker,” Michigan football wrote on Twitter. “Meechie was an inspiration to every member of our program and the Michigan family as a whole. He will be missed by so many.”
