Roddy Gayle Jr. got Michigan off and running, scoring the Wolverines’ first five points on his way to 17 , and U-M improved to 2-0 in Big Ten play with an 85-83 win over Iowa.

Th Wolverines came out smoking on both ends, grabbing an early 10-point lead, 14-4. Iowa had a hard time getting good looks let alone scoring, and were usually limited to one shot. Michigan big man Danny Wolf grabbed 5 rebounds in the first five minutes and the lead ballooned to 20-4.

But Iowa wouldn’t lay down. The Hawkeyes scored 7 in a row before Michigan center Vladislav Goldin scored inside to push the lead back to 22-11 at 10:40. The Wolverines turned it over 5 times in a 3:47 stretch to allow the Hawkeyes to come back. It was 22-16 at 8:23.

The Michigan turnovers continued. Two more empty possessions resulted in a 6-0 Iowa run that cut it to 28-24. At that point, the Wolverines had 9 giveaways on their way to 11 for the half. U-M had outshot the Hawkeyes 52 percent to 31, but Iowa had 11 more shots to stay within shouting distance. The Hawkeyes made enough to come all the way back and tied it at 37 before a Goldin free throw and a drive and finish from point guard Tre Donaldson made it 40-37 at the break.

Michigan also struggled again from three-point range in the first half besides several great looks, shooting 17 percent (2-for-12). Iowa was 3-for 13 from long range and shot only 38.7 percent in the first half.

Donaldson led U-M with 12 at the break, while Goldin added 9, Tschetter 8, Gayle 7 for the Wolverines, who shot 50 percent in the first stanza.

SECOND HALF — Michigan pulls away

Michigan continued its struggles early in the second half. Iowa made 5 of its first 6 shots and took its first lead, 45-44, on a drive and finish at 16:37.

The Hawkeyes pulled out to a three-point lead before the Wolverines responded with a step-back jumper from Wolf and a finish inside from Tschetter. That gave U-M a 52-51 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining. Tschetter’s triple in transition made it 55-51 at 13;40, and the Crisler crowd got loud.

It was 58-53 at 13:00 when Donaldson tripled in transition, but the pace picked up, and Iowa kept close with several timely triples. They were shooting 52.9 percent from the floor, 50 percent from long range in the half with 11:15 remaining, and getting several open looks.

The Wolverines started putting it together at the 10-minute mark. Wolf heated up and scored on several drives and finishes. Michigan made 5-of-7 field goals in the stretch and held Iowa to 1-for-9 to grab a 74-63 when Gayle’s drive and finish made it 74-63 at 7:14, forcing an Iowa timeout.

Wolf continued his assault on the rim after a TV timeout, driving and scoring again, but an Iowa triple cut it to 76-68 at the 6-minute mark. Iowa got four cracks after a U-M shot clock violation and cut it to 76-70. Goldin made four free throws in a stretch, a pair of one-and-ones, to keep the Wolverines somewhat comfortably ahead.

Still, it was only an 81-75 game at 2:17. It was 81-78 after Donaldson missed at the rim and Payton Sanfordt tripled from the corner in transition with only 1:40 remaining. Gayle missed at the rim, and Iowa got it back with a chance to tie. They cut it to one with a minute remaining on a jumper, but Gayle responded with a drive and lefty finish at :47. Wolf turned it over, and Sandfort’s triple from the corner tied it.

Gayle’s drive was goaltended at 4:6, and Iowa was left with one last shot with 1.5 seconds remaining. A contested corner triple was short, and Michigan improved to 2-0 in Big Ten play.

Wolf and Goldin finished with double-doubles (13 points, 14 rebounds and 20 and 11, respectively). Donaldson had 18, Gayle 17 in the win.
