Wolverines in the NBA: Franz Wagner a serious contender for Rookie of the Year award
Former Michigan Wolverines basketball wing Franz Wagner continues to impress during his rookie NBA season with the Orlando Magic, serving as one of few bright spots for the team with the worst record in the NBA.
The Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December averaged 19.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in the final month of 2021, which included a season-high 38-point outing Dec. 28 against the Milwaukee Bucks.
He’s second on the team in scoring (15.7 points per game) and fourth in rebounding (4.7 rebounds per outing), while adding 2.6 assists per contest.

The former No. 8 overall pick has checked in as the league’s top rookie on numerous power rankings, including NBA.com’s on Jan. 5 and Yahoo Sports’ Jan. 10.
“Wagner is leading all rookies in the following categories: Points (627), points per game (15.7), minutes played (1,288), field goals made (235) and free throws (104),” Krysten Peek of Yahoo Sports wrote. “Wagner is the dark horse in the Rookie of the Year race, making a strong case. Even teammate Cole Anthony is campaigning for him and voiced his frustration of Wagner getting overlooked early in the season. Recently, Anthony said he’s going to start calling Wagner “ROY” (Rookie of the Year) after a strong showing last month.
“Wagner is getting much more comfortable and is making the right reads off the pick-and-roll as the primary ball handler.”
Wagner has the fourth-best odds to win the Rookie of the Year award at +800, behind only Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley (-120), Toronto Raptors wing Scottie Barnes (+275) and Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham (+425).
While Wagner’s name is becoming more of a mainstay in the NBA, there are some lesser-known former Michigan players who have made news lately. With illnesses in the NBA on the uptick, players from the G League are being called up more frequently.
Former Michigan guard Derrick Walton Jr. was called up from the G League’s Motor City Cruise to the Pistons, starting three games, highlighted by a duo of outings that saw him notch six and nine assists.
Forward D.J. Wilson has been picked up by the Toronto Raptors. He’s played in three games with one start, posting eight points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per night while making a surprise impact.
Wolverine Nik Stauskas was called up from the Grand Rapids Gold to the Miami Heat and played in two games, totaling 11 points, three rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes of action.
Former Michigan center Jon Teske — who’s normally on the Lakeland Magic — is currently on a 10-day deal with the Memphis Grizzles, and has registered two rebounds and one assist in three appearances.
