Former Michigan Wolverines basketball head coach John Beilein underwent double-bypass heart surgery in 2018, which helped restore his health. He used his experience to help another, too — Detroit Pistons television play-by-play broadcaster George Blaha.

“On March 1, the Pistons played the Washington Wizards in Washington. March 2 was Ash Wednesday, so Blaha and Beilein went to Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Georgetown’s campus to receive their ashes,” Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press wrote, telling the story of the Michigan coach’s influence on Blaha’s decision to get surgery. “But Blaha received more than he anticipated — a health scare, and a big break.

“While walking roughly a mile uphill, Blaha began to feel tightness in his chest and shortness of breath. Beilein, who underwent double-bypass open heart surgery in 2018, urged Blaha to go see a doctor.

“Just two weeks later, on March 15, Blaha underwent triple-bypass surgery. Tests revealed his heart had three blockages that couldn’t be repaired with stents.

“Surgery caused him to miss Detroit’s final 15 games. In his previous 46 years as the Pistons’ leading voice, he had only missed three games because of illness.”

Michigan football’s assistant coaches are on the road this month (by rule, head coaches aren’t allowed to travel during this time period), and new Wolverines defensive coordinator made a big stop Thursday. He swung through Sharpsburg (Ga.) Trinity Christian to see four-star Florida defensive back commit Aaron Gates. While Gates pledged to the Gators last August, TheWolverine.com’s EJ Holland recorded a prediction for the On300 prospect to wind up at Michigan.

Minter wasn’t the only Michigan coach in Georgia. Defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Elston also made a swing through the Peach State, stopping through Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett for four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald.

Quote Of The Day

“We’re going to be physical, and we’re going to be attacking. We’re going to be aggressive … going to do those things just like we did last year, and we’re going to keep turning up the notch, keep getting better and better.”
