Michigan men’s basketball had its turn to speak on Wednesday afternoon at Big Ten Basketball Media Days in Minneapolis. Head coach Juwan Howard and junior center Hunter Dickinson, graduate point guard Jaelin Llewellyn and junior forward Jace Howard were the Wolverine men’s 3 representatives during the unofficial kickoff to the season.

The Wolverine was on hand for the podium portion with the media with the videos from the full sessions available below.

Juwan Howard weighs in on transfer portal

Michigan has made a habit out of pulling players out of the portal under Howard’s guiding hand. The Wolverines grabbed a pair of them in Llewellyn and sharpshooting wing Joey Baker this offseason.

Howard spoke on the transfer situation on Wednesday:

“It seems like there’s a trend with the program,” Howard said. “But it’s all about the timing of how it all works as far as what we needed at that position, then the scholarships that we have available. Jaelin has been great for us so far. I love the fact of how he’s been a leader, it is way how he leads. Sometimes it can be vocally as well as soft spoken by his actions.

“He’s also been able to transition into our system, the way how he’s able to read different situations. When the guys are not bringing it with their energy and effort in practice, which we haven’t had a lot of that, but he’s been able to speak, not afraid to have those uncomfortable moments. That’s a sign of leadership that we always enjoy having. I’m sure every coach that you talk to, when you have a player-led type of team, then that makes our job a lot easier as a coach.”

Michigan’s 2022-23 season kicks off with an exhibition vs. Ferris State at Crisler Center on Nov. 4 before the season opener on Nov. 7 against Purdue Fort Wayne at home.
