Newsstand: Juwan Howard explains offensive woes in Indiana loss
Michigan basketball let a winnable game slip away on Saturday in a 62-61 loss to Indiana that could have placed it on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Instead, it was more of the same and losing a close game that could have turned the season around.
Far too often this year, Michigan has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Saturday’s game saw the Wolverines go 5:12 to close out the game without a single point. There were several opportunities to close it out and Michigan did not oblige.
Head coach Juwan Howard seemed to credit a lack of execution and freelancing of offensive sets as to why Michigan let another one slip away. In many ways, it was the first time he has directly thrown his team under the bus after a game.
“[Lack of] organization,” Howard said. “That was a big reason why some of the sets that we weren’t able to get to — what we were asking from the offensive end —because there are times when your guys want to go ahead and do it how they want to do it,” head coach Juwan Howard said. “Or, they see something, how the defender is playing, and they feel that this is the best way to run the set.

“Overall, you’ve just got to trust. You also have to trust what is being asked and then also apply. That’s where I think we got into trouble down the stretch, where we weren’t able to get to the offense that was called. But that’s the learning process that our players have to get better with.”
Michigan does not have much time to lament Saturday’s game, as it heads to Wisconsin for a a showdown with the Badgers on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET.

Michigan quote of the day
“It’s gonna be tough to not let this one linger. The guys in the locker room were pretty upset and rightfully so. This was a game we let slip through our fingers. I’d be lying if I’d said you should be able to get over this easily. This one should hurt. I mean, it definitely hurts me.”
