EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines basketball dropped its fourth Big Ten game of the season, losing 83-67 at Michigan State Saturday afternoon at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing. The Maize and Blue are now 4-4 in conference play and 10-8 overall. Head coach Juwan Howard and sophomore forward Hunter Dickinson met with the media following the setback, discussing what went wrong in the second half and more.

Howard said he thought Michigan didn’t compete as hard as the Spartans in the first three minutes after halftime, and that the lack of momentum hurt his team going forward.

“Give Michigan State credit in the second half,” Howard, Michigan’s third-year head man, said. “They didn’t do anything schematically — and I’m not taking anything away from Coach and the coaching staff — but what they did was pretty special and give them credit for it … they came out as the most aggressive team, the most physical team. The first half, we were punching and fighting. Second half, we backed off. And that cannot happen.”

Dickinson discussed the Wolverines’ lack of connectivity on the defensive end, lamenting mistakes that were the result of faulty communication, and said his Michigan team must improve if they want to make any sort of run. The 2021 All-American called the remaining 12 regular-season games ‘must wins,’ and Howard said he likes that mentality from one of his leaders and hopes it trickles down the rest of the squad.

Michigan shot only three for 19 from long range and 37.1 percent overall Dickinson led the Michigan scoring with 25 points, but made only eight of 19 shots. Freshman forward Moussa Diabate and Houstan added 11 in the second half for the Wolverines, but it wasn’t enough to overcome MSU’s 44 points in the stanza and nine three-pointers for the game.
