Newsstand: Juwan Howard publicly addresses Frankie Collins transfer for first time
Michigan basketball head coach Juwan Howard is no stranger to the transfer portal. But there was an exit from the program that was an eyebrow-raiser for Howard heading into his fourth year on the job.
Point guard Frankie Collins transferred out of Michigan following his freshman season despite being labeled as the future at the position. The former four-star recruit was in the portal shortly after the Wolverines added Princeton transfer guard Jaelin Llewellyn this spring. After a brief recruitment, Collins committed to Arizona State.
Howard addressed the transfer last week.
“It came as a surprise to me,” Howard told the media. “It happened so fast. When Jaelin decided to commit, all of the sudden I looked up and Frankie was in the transfer portal. Wish Frankie all the best. Very, very thankful for Frankie for what he has done for this team last year. Came in, another young man that’s been one of the hardest workers on the team. Never had to beg him to come to the gym, he did it on his own.
“Guys in the locker room enjoyed playing with him, enjoyed being around him. The staff enjoyed coaching him. Beautiful family. We’re going to miss him. Whenever family decides to move on and they move all the way out West, it’s like you have a brother or sister get married and move out West with their family, it hurts a little bit. I just want to see him be successful. I am going to be one of his biggest fans.”
Llewellyn is now the de facto starting point guard in Ann Arbor. Howard likes what he can bring to the position at Michigan.

“One of the things that really stood out to me was the level of production with the ball in his hands,” Howard said. “Whether it’s decision-making but also his shooting. His shooting, that’s something that we would love to have knowing the type of guys that we were going to be losing. That was also a need I wanted for us to improve on. Jaelin, his shooting and his decision-making along with his athleticism, I felt like that was a no-brainer. That’s what made him super attractive for us.”

“I’m sure that song will stick with me for the rest of my life now. But I’m fully prepared for that and…I love that song. So, you know, I got my opportunity in front of the team meeting and I did it. It’s gonna follow me wherever I go, so now I can buy into it a little bit.”
