Michigan turned the ball over 22 times in the loss, a season high. The previous high was 19 in two different games — losses to Rutgers and Penn State.

“I’ll tell you one thing: When you have 22 turnovers, it’s tough to win,” Howard said. “Teams are just too good in our league. Give Michigan State credit. Defensively, they’re good, but there were a lot of like gifts that we gifted them — whether we tried to, of course, make home run plays and not go for the simple play or there were situations where we didn’t read the defense and tried to make a move, whether it was a travel or not allowing a defender to clear out, trying to go to an offensive move that led to a turnover.

“It was just some poor decisions that we had in situations where it caused 22 turnovers.”

Michigan was without sophomore forward Terrance Williams II, and four players had to log 33 or more minutes. Howard was asked if fatigue played a factor in the turnovers or another other negative aspect of the game. Michigan, of course, didn’t score in the final 7:01 of game time.

“I would say this: The excitement of playing your rival, I saw that our guys were really pumped up for this game,” Howard said. “Just to see some of the decision making that was happening on the floor came from the adrenaline of being excited to play against Michigan State and then also seeing a home crowd that brought the energy.

“But this is a time where we talked about it in timeouts, you have to, of course, just slow down, take a breather and allow the game to come to you. That’s something that, as a young man, you learn. It doesn’t just expect for it to happen. Those things happen, those moments where unfortunately when you come out as the loser and have 22 turnovers and then go back and see the ‘why’ of what caused the turnovers … I would not take anything away from Michigan State’s defense; it was more where we hurt ourselves.”
