ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines basketball head coach Juwan Howard, fifth-year senior guard Eli Brooks, sophomore center Hunter Dickinson and fifth-year senior guard DeVante’ Jones met with the media following the team’s 86-79 win over Nebraska Tuesday night at Crisler Center.

The game wasn’t without drama, with six lead changes, but the Maize and Blue climbed out of the seven-point hole they dug for themselves at halftime.

Michigan is now 11-8 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play. Nebraska, meanwhile, remains winless in the conference at 0-11 and hasn’t won a game since Dec. 22.

Dickinson led the way for Michigan with 26 points, while Brooks poured in 20 and Jones added 17. The Wolverines shot 47 percent from the field even with making just two of their 15 three-point attempts.

Michigan trailed by seven points at halftime, and Howard challenged his players in the locker room, the Wolverines said. Even though Dickinson played just 15 minutes in the first half due to committing two early fouls, Howard was all over Dickinson.

“Just challenging me to be more of a vocal leader,” Dickinson said of what the Michigan coach wanted him to do better. “That’s something that Coach Howard continually tells me — just try to be more of a extension of him on the court. That’s something that he’s definitely asked of me from the start of the season, something that I’m still working on, still trying to become that.”

During some of the timeouts, Howard was livid, Jones revealed. It appears to be a switch in philosophy, with many players harping on how calm Howard is on the sidelines and in huddles all season long. The fire approach appeared to work, with Michigan coming back from multiple deficits to pull out the victory.

“It’s actually the first time I’ve seen Juwan really mad,” Jones said. He was throwing the clipboard. But we needed it. At halftime, he got on us — everybody individually — so whatever he did, it helped us; we came back in the second half, we made a run, went up 10. They made a run, but we were able to make another run, so it was all about going through adversity.”
