Michigan went with zone in the second half and got some stops and turnovers, but the Wolverines weren’t able to go back to it as often or continue to have the same success. Illinois went on a 17-2 run and blew the Maize and Blue out, out-scoring them by 14 points in the second half to win going away.

“We were able to get some stops in the zone defense, just to give them a different look,” Howard said. “But there was a possession where they had a cut to the basket for a finish. Then we went back down on the offensive end and unfortunately we didn’t score so we couldn’t set up in the zone, so we ended up in man to man defense.

“I would basically say that overall defensively we didn’t show any type of presence or physicality in the second half like we did in the first half. We allowed this team to score 51 points in the second half and 42 points in the paint, as well as 16 second-chance points and overall 13 offensive rebounds. In this league … this league is a very physical league, and that’s tough when you give up that amount of points in the second half. Overall, I would just say defensively we didn’t do a good job in the second half like we did in the first half.”

Howard was asked about if he was pleased with the way Michigan competed.

“Effort was there, there were just times, based on mental mistakes, whether it was fatigue or a lack of communication … I would say both,” the Michigan coach said. “Just the fact that I recall there was a three by [Illinois forward] Coleman Hawkins in transition, where we had two guys that didn’t communicate and allowed an open three. And that was one of the big buckets that keyed their run. Then there was a Coleman Hawkins three in the corner that, of course, ignited it. And then there were finishes in the paint, whether it was by Ty Rodgers or by [Illinois forward] Marcus [Domask] that ignited the confidence. With that 17-2 run, it was deflating to the group.”

Michigan is back in action Tuesday night at No. 2 Purdue.
