Michigan basketball loses 7th straight, falls 84-61 at Ohio State

Michigan went nearly four minutes before scoring in an 84-61 loss at Ohio state and turned it over 4 times in the first 5 minutes. They were down by 8 only 6 minutes in, giving up several easy buckets. To their credit, this time they didn’t roll over. Sophomore guard Dug McDaniel scored 5 straight points with the Wolverines down 10-2 to make it tight again at the second TV timeout of the first half.
Poor defense and turnovers, though, would allow the Buckeyes to stay a step ahead. They got wide open looks and continued to take advantage of Michigan unforced miscues to score 8 points on them, including several highlight reel dunks.
U-M made runs each time the Buckeyes did, though, to keep it relatively close. McDaniel scored 9 points in the first half and senior Terrance Williams II added 8 on individual moves — the Wolverines managed only two total assists in the stanza — but sophomore big man Tarris Reed Jr. struggled with four turnovers and only two points despite getting several post touches. Michigan seemed intent on feeding it to him in the post, but it simply didn’t work.
Zed Key scored 8 points in the first half in an inspired effort, including a massive dunk over Will Tschetter, to provide a spark for the Buckeyes. But Michigan managed to cut the deficit to 32-27 at the break when McDaniel followed up a George Washington III miss with a layup just before the buzzer.
Michigan shot 40 percent from the floor to Ohio State’s 44.6 in the half.
SECOND HALF — Buckeyes pull away from Michigan again
Once again, Michigan started a half slowly. This time the Buckeyes took full advantage. They scored 10 straight points on what looked like a layup and dunk drill, taking a 42-27 lead.

McDaniel finally slowed the bleeding with a jumper. A Williams triple and a Youssef Khayat jumper cut it back to eight at the first media timeout and gave Michigan some life. A vicious transition dunk by Nimari Burnett cut it to 46-40 and stunned the crowd, but the Wolverines quickly gave up a wide-open triple on the other end.
The Wolverines had a chance to cut it to 5, but Williams turned it over on the fast break when Michigan had numbers. The Buckeyes hit a three on the other end, followed up with a 3-point play after a Reed miss, and pushed the lead back to 60-47. That would about do it with 8:42 remaining. OSU quickly pushed it to 67-51, and all that was left was to run out the clock on a convincing win.
They weren’t content to do that, though. They continued to force Michigan into turnover after turnover — the Wolverines would finish with 18 — and ran it up for another embarrassing loss for the Wolverines.
McDaniel led Michigan with 19 points, while Williams added 13. U-M will close the season with a home game against Nebraska next weekend before entering the Big Ten Tournament the following week as the No. 14 seed.
