Michigan basketball’s season is on the ropes after an 83-61 blowout loss at Penn State on Sunday. Star center Hunter Dickinson had one of his worst outings of the year, scoring 6 points on 3-of-9 shooting on a day when nothing was going right for the Wolverines.

Dickinson’s performance was shared by most of the team who shot 42.4% from the floor on the evening. Freshman wing Jett Howard was the outlier, scoring 21 points in his return from an ankle injury.

“We know Hunter gave us some problems down low last game,” Penn State guard Jalen Pickett said on BTN after the game. “We tried to make things tough for him and put some bigger bodies on him, trying to wear him down was really going to help us.”

“I’m proud of these guys,” Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “I challenged them. I challenged them after Rutgers. That’s what families do. They get on each other. They talk about each other. They fight. They scrape. They do whatever they want. But that’s my family and I’m riding with those guys. I’m allowed to talk about them but I’m not going to let anybody else talk about those guys.”

For Michigan, the picture is bleak the rest of the way. KenPom now projects a 15-16 finish to the season and their NCAA Tournament hopes are dead without reeling off several big wins down the stretch. The next challenge comes in the form of a road trip to Northwestern on Thursday evening in Evanston.

Michigan quote of the day

“We will go back and look at the film. I’ll show Hunter that there are ways that he’s being a little unselfish and that has to be a little bit more selfish when you catch it, especially in the paint.”
