Wolverine TV podcast: Breaking down Michigan's win over Purdue, road ahead with Ant Wright
TheWolverine.com’s Clayton Sayfie is joined by former Michigan basketball player and On3 hoops analyst Ant Wright to break down the Maize and Blue’s 82-58 blowout win over No. 3 Purdue Thursday night, what the victory did for the Wolverines’ NCAA Tournament resume, what the road ahead looks like and more.
Despite getting in from Penn State early Wednesday morning, Michigan had more energy than the Boilermakers and handled them wire to wire. Purdue led for just 36 seconds of game time.
Wright was impressed with the way the Wolverines defended the Boilermakers, who are the most efficient offensive team in the country according to Kenpom, a renowned analytics site. Purdue wing Jaden Ivey put up 18 points, but he wasn’t as efficient as the first meeting.
“They did a much better job on Ivey,” Wright said. “The five turnovers … and when you are a team who struggles with creation. Purdue is a very, very good team, but their only guy who can do any creating right now is Jaden Ivey. And when he’s not able to get in the paint at will, get down hill — that’s kind of been their achilles heel this year, their point guard play, not being able to handle the ball in tough situations, operate in the pick and roll.
“And Michigan did a really good job on their shooters — closing out hard, forcing shots from 25, 26 feet, rather than 23, 24. That matters, being a foot or two further, with a different trajectory and shot strength and all that. Michigan did a really good job there. They did a good job with, mainly, their shooters.”

The Boilermakers are top 10 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, but wound up with just four made triples on 18 attempts against the Wolverines.
Michigan has No. 16 Ohio State up next at Crisler Center in another Quad 1 matchup. The Wolverines are looking to boost their NCAA Tournament resume even further before heading on the road for tilts at Iowa and at Wisconsin.
