Newsstand: Michigan basketball ranking updated by CBS Sports
Michigan basketball still has an open roster spot for the 2022-23 season, but the nationwide preseason rankings from CBS have been updated. CBS Sports’ Garry Parrish ranked as the No. 19 team in the country where things stood as of June 21. Gonzaga, North Carolina, Houston, Kentucky and Duke were the teams that comprised the top five this go-round.
The Tar Heels solidified their roster with former Northwestern forward Pete Nance, who was a Michigan target at one point. Of course, Michigan added Duke transfer wing Joey Baker to the roster over the weekend. It did not move the needle much for the Wolverines, though.
“The Wolverines’ ranking is based on a returning core of Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams being joined by an incoming class highlighted by Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn and top-40 prospect Jett Howard, the latter of whom was named MVP at the Iverson Classic,” Parrish wrote. “Juwan Howard should have the Wolverines in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.”
At one point, the possibility existed that Michigan could be a top ten team that leads the way in the Big Ten. There is still work to do, as Parrish puts Indiana at No. 16, making them the conference’s top-ranked team.
“The Hoosiers’ ranking is based on Indiana returning the top three scorers from a team that made the NCAA Tournament – among them Trayce Jackson-Davis, who could be a candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year,” he said. “Indiana’s recruiting class is ranked fifth nationally and highlighted by 5-star prospects Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau.”

Michigan quote of the day
“Before we jump to how it can be exploited in a bad way — as we all know, human nature, that’s something that is definitely a possibility … I think we can all agree, take jersey sales for example, or T-shirts, memorabilia, those kinds of things that every school has, every school has the bookstore or the shop where fans’ orders can go to buy their gear. It makes sense that the player whose number is on that jersey, their name is on that jersey, should share in that revenue,” Harbaugh said. “That example right there, I think, we all agree on.
“Also, to profit off their name, their image and their likeness, I support it. You just support anybody’s ability to do that. That’s all in the positive light and the way we’re approaching things here at Michigan.”
