Michigan basketball was dealt a major blow on Wednesday with the news that point guard Jaelin Llewellyn is out for the season with an ACL injury. Llewellyn, who went down with a non-contact knee injury in a loss to Kentucky in London, has started all eight games this season.

Llewellyn was averaging 7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He has started all 84 games in his career, scoring 1,120 points with 316 rebounds and 212 assists.

Llewellyn will begin rehabilitation and prep immediately before his expected surgery sometime in early January, according to the Michigan program.

It is now next-man-up for Michigan basketball, who will lean on freshman point guard Dug McDaniel the rest of the way. McDaniel, who was a 4-star recruit and the no. 70 overall player in the 2022 class per On3, is averaging 4.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this season in just under 15 minutes per game.

The Wolverines have leaned on the transfer portal in recent years to address the point guard need instead of grooming their guy of the future. By necessity, that will now be the case with McDaniel set to drink out of the firehose a bit. The Wolverines are thin at the position, so we may also see lineups where Kobe Bufkin runs the point.

The Wolverines have had a rough go of it to start the year and now will be without their starting point guard. We’ll have to wait and see how it affects the team, but things are not getting any easier in Ann Arbor.
