Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball has made contact with another big man in the NCAA transfer portal, reaching out to San Diego State 7-footer Magoon Gwath. The news was first reported by College Basketball Content on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Gwath (7-0, 205 pounds) is the No. 11 overall player mand No. 4 power forward in the transfer portal per the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. He also expected to test the NBA Draft process, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

He averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 0.7 assists this year, shooting 50.6% from the floor. Gwath also showed off some range from three, making 37.8% of his attempts on 17-for-45 shooting. Gwath also made 63% of his foul shots on the season.

Should Gwath return to school, it will likely be with another program. The second-year player was the Mountain West’s Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year this season, starting all 26 games for the Aztecs. He missed five games this year after a right knee hyperextension, but returned for the NCAA Tournament and had 9 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in the First Four loss to North Carolina.

The Union-Tribune spoke to SDSU head coach and former Michigan assistant Brian Dutcher, who speculated that his market value was too much for the Aztecs to compete with:

“Financially, it’s hard for us to compete with some of these other schools for these upper-level kids,” SDSU coach Brian Dutcher said. “We can compete in every other way. We can’t compete financially with the money that’s being offered for some of these players. It is what it is. It’s a new world.

“There’s too much money at stake.”

Gwath’s father is an Uber driver and his mother is a custodian in the Dallas area. Dutcher estimated Gwath will command “in excess of $1 million, maybe as high as $1.5 million or $1.7 million” the way the market is trending this spring.

He redshirted last season and attended Veritas Prep in Garden Grove, California, after three seasons at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas. Coming out of high school, he had offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Southern California and Villanova.

The Wolverines have a major need at center with Vladislav Goldin out of eligibility after this season and Danny Wolf potentially declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft. Michigan also has feelers out to a pair of bigs in the portal in Iowa’s Owen Freeman and Valparaiso’s Cooper Schweiger.
